Creating Family Memories with the Newmans | Julie Bird Photography, Jackson, TN
I've known Robyn for a long time. Not to sound like a stalker, but when we were kids I remember seeing her as an adorable, red haired orphan singing on stage. I thought she was so cool and talented. She's gonna get me for that Annie reference. I've had the pleasure of photographing this sweet family before, and I think beauty and talent run in their genes. Robyn is super artistic and creative. In fact, you should check out her page on Facebook, called Robyn's Nest 731. She has adorable handmade items, and she's just the kind of person who brings good vibes and sunshine wherever she goes.
When Robyn got in touch about family pictures I asked about the girls. Anna and Audrey are all grown up and have big things going on; Robyn wanted to capture their family together before this next chapter in their lives. We decided to do the photo session in Jackson, TN at the West TN AgResearch and Education Center. The gardeners and landscapers always keep it so nicely. It's a great location for family photos in all seasons, but especially when things are greening up and blooming.
Sometimes people think family pictures are a chore, or that they will be boring. However, my most treasured photos of my family are centered around the emotions and the laughs we had during the shoot. It's stressful for some people (including me), and we are all so busy. When our kids are babies we document everything, but then life happens and kids get busy and grow up. I love photographing families with teen and young adults when they are relaxed and authentic and having fun, especially when I have dads like Paul, who play along and smile and understand why family portraits are so important to moms. Photographs of your family should not just be a moment frozen in time. They should be a window to a memory. Hairstyles and clothing styles change, seasons in life change, but the love between sisters and their parents never change. I want them to remember the hat perched on Dad's head, mom's broken shoe strap, "drunk walking", and all the laughs and smiles, even the mosquitos. Their connection to one another, their time spent together, all the little ordinary moments, the tilt of a head, talking about dinner. Those are the magical moments that mean more in life than the big events. And those are the moments we need to celebrate. No distractions, just having a lovely evening out in the sunshine. As I get older I realize that savoring those ordinary days and being present in them is the key to finding joy, and those memories are what our kids (big and little) need.
As Anna and Audrey embark on exciting new chapters of their lives, I want to wish them well. Thank you, Newman family, for allowing me to help you preserve memories, moments, laughs, and warm spring evenings.
